Superman Title, Villain Announced

IGN: Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder's new Superman film, titled Man of Steel.

Snyder stated, "Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."

Michael Shannon? Really? I mean he's good and all, just doesn't seem right for the part, though. I would've much rather had Viggo in the role.

Does sound (and look) like a weird choice to play Zod. I admit, Viggo would have been perfect for the role since he does military/warrior very well.

JL4763d ago

Exactly. I mean he just doesn't look (or even sound) right. Granted he is a good actor, maybe he'll surprise me, but I'm more accustomed to seeing him playing a grittier or more "trailer-ish" role and not something as "refined" as Zod. Not to mention the look just doesn't look right either. Viggo would've indeed been perfect.

I dunno, he has a mean/serious look. Dress him up right and it could work.

I wasn't even happy with the Superman choice...So I don't know what to think.

Overall its sounding like they are planning to do what I don't want them to do. make Superman dark. I understand this is where movies are, and for some reason people think dark movies are good movies, but it isn't Superman.

Oh well, we just need to leave faith in Zach and hope this isn't Watchmen with Superman....

We've had a generation of "bright" super heroes, I say make 'em dark now. I've seen superman's happy side enough times, so I'm quite intrigued to see a grittier Superman.

But to be honest, I don't think it will be THAT dark. I think it will still have the superman vide.

Soldierone4762d ago

Thats the thing, some superheroes are better dark. Batman as a bright character was a comedy, he is much better as a dark person because his origins warrent that.

Spiderman tried to be dark with Spiderman 3, look how that turned out. He doesn't need to be that dark. Im not against having dark times, but the entire motive shouldnt be dark.

Superman is the same way. He isn't dark. Its Superman. His enviroment can be dark, when he dies it can be dark, but the entire world doesnt need to be Gotham City and Superman doesn't need to be an emo punk.

Spiderman 3 was dark? I seem to remember it being just as silly and lighthearted as the previous ones. Sure there was drama with Mary Jane, but I wouldn't call it "dark" by any means.

Crazay4763d ago

It moved? Really?!? It's never moved over a movie that didn't have either Jenna Jamieson or Jesse Jane.

I knew it was going to be Zod in the next movie.

hazelamy4763d ago

i hope that means we'll actually get to see superman in a proper superpowered fight, with major property damage, getting knocked through buildings and all that good stuff.

not just seeing him getting beaten up by generic thugs because of the old kryptonite thing.

the last film was decent enough, but superman is still a comic book character, how can you make a superman film and not have him fight anybody for almost the whole bloody movie.

as for the casting, i'm really not familiar with this guy so i can't really offer any solid opinions either way, mind you i'm pretty oblivious when it comes to this cavill guy as well.

personally, 1 can't wait to see the film, whoever's cast.

As much as I love Viggo, I'm sorry, Michael Shannon is just on another level and he is better suited for this role. Mortensen is better suited at playing stoic characters, I was more disappointed that he didn't get the role of The Gunslinger in the upcoming Dark Tower adaptation (Javier Bardem is still a great pick btw). Michael Shannon plays creepy like noone else, he'll be an awesome villian. He is easily in the upper echelon of actors working today.

i loved him in broadwalk empire, very creepy lol.
