The Dark of the Matinee Review: Sucker Punch

The Dark of the Matinee:
If you don't want to be clever; be fun
If you don't want to be fun; be intelligent.

If you don't want to be fun or intelligent; get the hell off the screen

Sucker Punch is the story of Baby Doll (Emily Browning). After her mother dies, her step-father has her wrongfully committed to a mental institution. It's there that she is put under the care of Dr. Vera Gorski (Carla Gugino) who treats her patients in "The Theater". How exactky The Theater is supposed to benefit the girls is unclear, but the film presses forward and lobs Baby Doll onto the theatre stage.

I don't see the problem. It wasn't intelligent per se, but it was indeed fun.

I don't rate this movie as highly as others here have, but I don't see how you could give it a 0/4 score. Wouldn't that mean a lack of any movie experience at all?

That's what it would seem to indicate. It would have to be the worst movie in the history of movies with absolutely no redeeming qualities.

Once the uncut version comes out and it really does change the movie in all aspects and actually gets what everyone is complaining about I would laugh SO hard....

People need to stop going into movies with already set expectations, not low or high just none thats what I do and it seems I tend to like alot of movies more than other people. Like Aliens VS. Ninja i watched it with no thought and was amused through out, ridiculously corny and tons of "LOL" moments but I'd rate it on its own merits not on merits other movies go for.

ps. Just watched Watchmen for the first time. AWESOME MOVIE

I think the problem with most reviewers is that they go in with a critic mindset. You look at movies a different way in that regard. You're going in to find ways just to critique it. That doesn't really allow one to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Either that or they can't just enjoy a "mindless" thrill ride for what it is. I do tend to like movies many others don't when it comes to the "popcorn flick" area.

Alien vs Ninja though, since you mentioned it, I thought was total garbage. That's with me going in with a clear mind just to have a little amusement from a corny cheesy movie. Still thought it was horrible though.

lol, yea i saw the youtube ads and I'm like "WOAH, need to see this joke" I'm going to school for VFX so i was semi interested what they were doing.

Holy crap, a 0 out of 4. Seriously, I don't know how you can rate a movie like this lower than all of the others out there. Hell on that site they gave Tempest a review of a least 2 out of 5, and that movie was nothing but a garbled mess which ruined the fantastic source material.

I'm seriously starting to wonder if reviewers are giving it this low of a score because of the negative hype around it and wanting to seek attention for it.

In a world where Uwe Boll is still making movies, there's no way this film is going to get a 0.

Well hi folks - nice to read your thoughts on my review.

So the two questions seem to be about what my expectations were going into the film, and how I could give it a score of zero.

I go into *every* movie, even films my wife drags me to against my will, wanting to enjoy them. I don't need the film to change my life, or tell me a profound story as long as *something* in it entertains me and makes me feel like I got my money's worth.

I saw the film on opening night, and knew that the advance buzz was pretty low. That actually usually helps since it can lower the bar (ie "Don't know what everyone was complaining about - it wasn't that bad!").

Unfortunately, as the film played out, I couldn't fight that one nagging feeling: boredom. The story was slight, the visuals weren't anything new, and the whole thing just wasn't having any fun. It was too cliche to take seriously, and too earnest to play for thrills.

So I spent two hours being very bored...and know what folks? That ain't easy for me. I found things to like in a lot of movies that a lot of others wrote off as crap...but there is *nothing* in this film that gave me value for my time and money, nor talk up to someone else.
