Jules (Julianne Moore - Chloe) and Nic (Annette Bening – American Beauty) are a lesbian couple who enjoy an idyllic life. They have two kids, 15-year-old Laser (Josh Hutcherson – Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant) is Jules’ birth-child whilst 18-year-old Joni (Mia Wasikowska – Alice In Wonderland) is Nic’s. Both Nic and Jules used the same anonymous sperm donor to get pregnant and now both kids are getting curious as to whom their father could be. So they track him down and to their surprise find him to be a really nice person who wants to get to know them more. Paul (Mark Ruffalo – Shutter Island) is very likable and it’s not long before the kids and Jules are smitten but Nic doesn’t like that someone is interfering with her family dynamic. As a result, cracks start to form in her relationships with the kids and Jules.
