The Film Pilgrim Review: Rango

The Film Pilgrim:
here are a number of legendary fables on which Hollywood will never stop trying to put a new spin. Cinderella, Romeo And Juliet, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, Brewster’s Millions – a small but well-worn list of simply told, centuries-old classics.

But there is a modern legend that Hollywood is not averse to retreading when ideas run shallow, and that, rather surprisingly, is the plot of John Landis’ 1986 comedy Western ¡Three Amigos!. This tale of three actors whom a harassed town mistakenly think are real heroes has been unaccreditedly appropriated for a number of big-name films since: Galaxy Quest transplanted the setting to outer space; A Bug’s Life set it in the microscopic world of insects; and My Name Is Bruce did it shoddily with Bruce Campbell. This year the story heads back to its origins in the new comedy Western, Rango.

I know I'm eager to see this movie. I have loved the previews of it so far, and am looking forward to it. Mostly, every time a commercial comes on, my son will stop and pay attention, and laugh at all of the creatures. He seems interested and that's enough reason for me...too bad he's not quite old enough yet.

VFX look good and I'm always willing to bet money on Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp.

***But there is a modern legend that Hollywood is not averse to retreading when ideas run shallow, and that, rather surprisingly, is the plot of John Landis’ 1986 comedy Western ¡Three Amigos!.***

Sorry, just a bit of nitpicking. It is my understanding that the egg in this relationship was Seven Samurai.

***My Name Is Bruce did it shoddily with Bruce Campbell***

Eh, I can see the comparison, but honestly the movie wasn't written with that in mind. And, shoddy? The author does realize that the B-movie making of the titular B-movie actor was on purpose, right?

***If you want a version of this plot that’ll have you guessing, watch Chinatown***

I chuckled at this line.

***Depp carries the film expertly, as Johnny Depp always does***

/em requisite eye roll

Will likely be seeing this with the wife on Friday or Saturday. While my comments above may paint a picture of not liking the movie, I just had issues with some of the freedoms taken by the writer.
