China Limits Smoking in Films, TV Shows

China is ordering makers of films and TV shows to limit the amount of smoking depicted on-screen, the latest effort to curb rampant tobacco use in the country with the largest number of smokers in the world.

The order from the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television viewed Tuesday on its website orders producers to minimize plot lines and scenes involving tobacco and show smoking only when necessary for artistic purposes or character development.

We went through the same thing. I think you can't smoke on television unless you smoke in real life, and in film you are allowed to opt out of a smoking scene.

Either way i dont see how that really encourages new smokers by any means. I can understand a smoker trying to break a habbit would have issues with it though.

I never cared for people who smoked on tv or movies. I mean I know that smoking is bad and that's why I never will smoke. But, they try to make people seem badass by showing that they are smoking. But, even today kids are becoming smokers due to peer pressure in our society rather than through entertainment.

At first I thought this was a ridiculous idea but now that I actually think about it... if I was a smoker and I wanted to quit I for sure wouldn't want to see a bunch of other people smoking on tv or in movies.

Exactly. At first thought its like "wtf thats restricting creativity" but deep down you know how hard it is to break a habbit, especially smoking.

Plus how hard is it to take smoking out. Want to make someone a badass or something find another way.

Cool beans. I'm all for it. I don't think it's as big a deal as many are going to make it out to be. Personally I think that it can help, but at the same time it's not a proven thing. All kinds of different factors go into whether or not a person smokes...it's really not because of a movie or any one thing.

Hell I grew up with Looney Tunes and there were several cartoons in which the characters smoked, and I'm about as anti-smoking as it gets.

I remember those too. The big ole cigar, or when they would blow smoke into other characters faces haha. Back when cartoons were good.

Lol, I guess the next MGS game will remove smoking due to the new laws. But, what's Snake without a cigarette?

Soldierone4811d ago

That would kinda suck lol, but im not sure it involves games? since he is established as a smoker it would be ok for him to smoke, you just wont see smoking loading screens.

@Sunny_D

How dare you suggest such a blasphemous thing! One of the things I loved in MGS though is that when you equipped the cigarettes, you were given the Surgeon Generals warning, and your health bar went down. Didn't they switch it to cigars in the last one though?
