Details of 'How to Train Your Dragon' Sequel Revealed

Hollywood Reporter says:

Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the first film, tells THR 'it's going to be quite epic.'

The sequel to DreamWorks Animation's hit movie How to Train Your Dragon will move beyond the small, North Sea island that was the setting of the original film as it traces the further adventures of Hiccup as he grows toward becoming the leader of his Viking clan.

Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the first film, revealed he is currently working on the second draft of the screenplay, which he expects will be at least the second film in a trilogy.

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing this yet but my understanding is that it's awesome and I'm impatiently awaiting it's arrival from Amazon any day now.

How to Train Your Dragon was real good. I really enjoyed it. So much so that I might even prefer it getting the Oscar over Toy Story 3. Speaking of which, a theater around here is showing The Illusionist (the third Oscar-nominated Animated film) this week...unfortunately I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make it there with it only having limited viewings :(

Crazay4823d ago

I never heard of the Illusionist. Looks like How to Train Your Dragon is poised to be delivered today so I should be trying to watch it tonight.

JL4823d ago

The Illusionist is one of the 3 Best Animated Picture nominees (along with How to Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3).

It's a foreign animated movie (English made based on a French script) that's received tons of praise. I really want to see it. Of course, my goal is to actually see all movies that have received an Oscar nomination this year before the awards hit. Which I should have done by then if I can find another way to see The Illusionist between now and then if I can't make it to the theater. Then of course most of the shorts will be giving me a problem as well.

I say give the Oscar to How to Train Your Dragon, only because I'd rather Toy Story 3 win best picture overall.

JL4823d ago

If Toy Story 3 wins Best Picture, I'll.....I'll eat my hat. I think that's a very VERY unlikely possibility. For one, never has an animated film won it. Also, Toy Story 3 isn't in the Best Director category, which 90% of the time those two categories go hand-in-hand. And to top it off, as much as I did like Toy Story 3, some of the Best Picture nominees were definitely better.

Also, if they actually gave Toy Story 3 Best Picture but it didn't win Best Animated Film...that would make no sense whatsoever. Hell, at this point it wouldn't even make sense for Toy Story 3 not to win Animated anyways, since it's the only one from that category to also be nominated for Best Picture.

darklordzor4822d ago

Oh I totally agree, it's very unlikely for Toy Story 3 to win best picture, but that doesn't mean I'm not hoping for it. It's a futile hope, but hope nonetheless.

I love How to Train Your Dragon!! (and I'm not just speaking for my nieces and nephews :) )

To follow JL's train on the animated film nominees: When will they stop making that a separate category? And if it is a category, shouldn't Avatar have been in it ;)

darklordzor4823d ago

Looking forward to seeing a sequel from this story, I just hope that Dreamworks can hold it together and not ruin the franchise with crappy sequels...like what happened to Shrek.

Crazay4822d ago

=|

That hurts - I loved the Shrek movies as does my wife and daughter (though she is only 18.5 months old)

darklordzor4822d ago

Hey I'm not bashing all of them...just the really bad sequels. My wife loves those movies too though.

Soldierone4822d ago

Yeah I see that coming here too. Shrek was great, the last one was great, but the two middle releases were way too childish for me.

It kinda takes them to slap themselves in the face to realize what made the first film great.

darklordzor4822d ago

It wasn't even about being childish for me with those movies...they just weren't that great. I did like the second one, but none of the rest.

Soldierone4822d ago

I dunno cus I didn't like the middle two. The last one had a lot of that adult humor all throughout it and I was busting up laughing the entire time.

There were times I was kinda bored but overall it was a fantastic film. I think Dreamworks has some gems, they just don't know how to keep them gems like Pixar does.

filmfreak4822d ago (Edited 4822d ago )

I liked this movie fine but it wasnt anything special to me i even liked Despicable Me better. I will just have to see how this one looks.

Soldierone4822d ago

So this made me want to see it, and now im renting it and watching it with the GF tomorrow haha. The trailer is so awesome, hopefully the film is just as good.
