On Screen Review: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Stieg Larrson's novel comes to life courtesy of Swedish director Niels Arden Oplev.
The first in the series of 3 films starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander, a young rebellious woman who has survived a tremulous upbringing.

She spends her time using her expert hacking skills and keen eye for detail to traffic information to the highest bidder. This evidently leads her into the epicenter of a decade old mystery involving a well respected Swedish family.

The Vanger family is trying to piece together the mysterious disappearance of one of their family members. Harriet Vanger went missing years prior, and left in her wake a series of of unexplained murders she was on the brink of uncovering.

Now, with the help of Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), an ex finance reporter, the Vanger's hope to find out the truth. Cue Lisbeth's haphazard involvement as she joins forces with Mikael in an attempt to solve the case

Can someone help me and tell me where the hell this movie came from? Im seeing it everywhere and its not even getting good reviews....

darklordzor4936d ago

If I'm not mistaken this actually comes from Sweden. It's an indie film and isn't related to the adaptations that we are going to do here in the States (well except for the same actress being involved).

Yes it is Swedish. It came out over there in 2009. Just released earlier this year over here in the US. And no, this is not to be mistaken for the Hollywood remake. In fact, this movie HAS received good reviews (I think it was up to like 90% when I last saw on Rotten Tomatoes). It's a pretty good movie, I thought. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

And here I will correct one thing Darklord said. The same actress is not involved in the Hollywood remake. The remake will be completely different with a whole new cast and crew. Noomi Rapace played the girl in the Swedish version (the version mentioned here). Rooney Mara is taking the role in the US version. Rooney Mara was in the new Nightmare on Elm Street. As well she's in The Social Network. Noomi Rapace is coming to US to take the lead female role in Sherlock Holmes 2 and there are rumors she will be in the Aliens Prequel.

Well Hell's Bells! I could have sworn I read somewhere that she was taking up the role again...I guess that was just a rumor, that I didn't hear back on. Oh well, I was about to say that I too remember seeing plenty of positive reviews for this film (even on this site).

Oh and last I heard Rapace was still only rumored for the role in the Alien prequel. No one has been officially cast, and Natalie Portman, and even Anne Hathaway are on the list of potentials with Rapace.

Yea. Hence why I said "there are rumors she will be in the Aliens Prequel". :P

But yea, I think I do remember rumors or at least fan fare about wanting her to reprise the role in the American version, but that's definitely not happening. She's moving onto other things now.

The Daily Rotation - The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (2011) Review

Jeremy of The Daily Rotation wrote, "Director David Fincher is known for making dark and unrelenting films. All of his films carry a thick atmosphere that is undeniably one of his trademarks. He oftentimes deals with flawed or damaged characters. He’s made an impression in Hollywood with films like Se7en, Fight Club, Panic Room, Zodiac and last years The Social Network. So when rumors surfaced about another adaptation of Stieg Larrson‘s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, most knew that his name being attached to the project was enough reassurance to warrant a remake/reimagining so closely after the 2009 Swedish film. Fincher’s adaptation is exactly that, an adaptation. It’s not a scene for scene remake, in fact he swaps out a handful of scenes for some that work better and some that don’t. He also changes the focus from Rooney Mara‘s Lisbeth Salander to Daniel Craig‘s Mikael Blomkvist."
