A year before Jean-Luc Godard was born, around the time Eric Rohmer was learning division and multiplication, Manoel de Oliveira was shooting shorts about day laborers on the shores of the Douro River. Now only a few months shy of his 102nd birthday, de Oliveira continues to make films of graceful intelligence and narrative simplicity, such as his latest, the hypnotic 64-minute Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl.
