EB: The maligned Solo: A Star Wars Story didn't do so hot during its Memorial Day opening weekend, which stinks if you saw the film and realized how entertaining it is.

What! Solo's failure is because the true Star Wars fans have had enough of this agenda pushing nonsense.

Soc52154d ago

Everyone thinks that there is this sjw agenda, but I think the true agenda is marketing towards women, women have been the forgotten market in games, movies, comics etc. and the corporate powers that be have decided that they are missing 50 percent of the demographic in those niches. And they aim to open women's wallets as much as men's wallets. Even the NFL has jumped in, have you noticed the marketing towards women in feminine jerseys, commercials etc. Even car commercials lean heavily towards women now because they figured out that most purchasing decisions go through the woman in the household. It all boils down to money. They don't care about social issues lol.

killbillvolume122155d ago

Jeremy Jahns new video you guys need to check it out honestly he hit it out of the park. He touches on everything and finally its going mainstream and NO ITS NOT FATIGUE....

Soc52153d ago

Yeah it was spot on. How silly of the execs to wave away criticism from the fans by saying oh it's just they didn't get it or they don't like social issues etc. Maybe, possibly, it's a crappy inconsistent film that left viewers feeling unhappy.
Look at Marvel, they're killing it by giving fans what they want. Star wars execs can keep pissing off viewers and losing money or I don't know, stay true to the lore and characters, add a good story, make a good movie and make a ton of money. I don't see what the dilemma is.

kevnb2154d ago (Edited 2154d ago )

Movie has made 179,993,024 so far world wide according to boxoffice mojo yet it is somehow a flop? Pure hyperbole! It wont be a huge hit like the main entries, but it should make a good amount of profit even with its huge 250 million dollar budget. I predict it to pass 600 million total.

coolbeans2154d ago (Edited 2154d ago )

But when looking at the costs of expensive re-shoots, Solo's been said to have cost well north of 250 million dollars.
And, yeah, it would be considered a financial flop when put up to any measurement of any other Star Wars film.

EDIT: Which sticks too. I'm not trying to rag on the film, as I think it was a pleasant surprise.

Nodoze2154d ago

This is the second time directors have been fired mid stream, and everyone had to scramble to recover due to Queen Kathleen. She does NOT know how to make a film. She coatailed her way to her current role and she is frankly not qualified. Just because she got coffee for Spielberg, and Lucas does not make her a good film maker.

She is CANCER and needs to be CUT OUT.

thorstein2153d ago

Uh. It's been one week.

Lovable2154d ago

For a star wars film that is a pretty sad numbers.

The 10th Rider2154d ago (Edited 2154d ago )

They don't make 100% of the box office. It's like 60% in the US and 30-40% overseas. Plus Even the lowest estimates for budget is $250, with some saying it was over $300m . . . Neither of those include marketing, which easily puts the film's cost at $400m+. Even if the film does cross $600m, the break even point is likely around $700-800m. Current estimates put the worldwide total around $400m. It may make $250m in the US, but it's pretty much dead in most countries around the world already. It's pretty much on track to be one of the biggest box office bombs of all time.

thorstein2153d ago

Budget includes marketing. I don't know where that comes from, I have heard it so many times on here that I can't place where it originated.

It's weird. I think it is usually used by the "journos" that collectively decide what are failures, despite box office success.

Consider that Solo is sitting 20 million behind Ready Player One, which no one said failed, and 70 million behind a quiet place, which has had a month and a half head start. It also opened bigger than both.

The 10th Rider2152d ago (Edited 2152d ago )

@thorstein,

Lol, maybe you should know what you're talking about before commenting.

Production budget does NOT include marketing. You probably hear about it so much on here because it's 100% true. The $250M+ or $300M+ numbers are for the PRODUCTION budget. The reason it was so expensive is because they reshot 80% of the film.

Ready Player One had a production budget of about $175M . . . $100M less than Solo did.

Solo will almost certainly gross more than Ready Player One did in the US. Ready Player One is at around $135M domestic. Solo will likely end around $200M Domestic.

However worldwide is a completely different ballgame. Ready Player One is sitting at close to $450M worldwide and Solo is set to end around $150M worldwide . . . a difference of $300M. In fact, Ready Player One made more overseas than Solo will make overall and it was substantially cheaper to make.

Ready Player one had a production budget of around $175M and likely a marketing budget under $100M. That's $250-275M total. Domestically the film is sitting around $135 and they'll get about 60% of that . . . so around $80M. Worldwide the film is sitting at $450M and they may get about 40% of that . . . That's $180M. So in total the film is set to make them around $260M on a $250-275M budget . . . right around the break even point. It's certainly not a success, but it didn't really fail either.

Originally Solo's budget was likely around $200M or so, but then they hired a new director, recast a character, and reshot 80% of the film. The production budget is now reported to be $250M+ or even $300M+. Marketing is likely a bit more than Ready Player One. Marketing + Production is probably in the $400-450M range. The film is likely going to end around $200M domestic, which will make them $120M. Worldwide the film is looking at like $150M, which will get them around $60M. In total the film will earn them about $180M on a $400-450M budget. That means the film is on track to lose around $220-270M, which would make it the biggest box office bomb in history.

Bringing A Quiet Place into it shows you have a complete and utter lack of understanding about the whole situation. A Quiet Place had a budget of just $17M. That's less than *one fifteenth* of Solo's budget. That's an insane difference. The general rule of thumb is you spend another half the production budget on marketing. It's likely the film's marketing was around $10M. (Though they may have spent more after the film started doing well). A Quiet Place is currently around $180M domestic, which would earn around $110M. Worldwide it's made around $130M, which would make them around $50M. That means the film has already earned $160M on a production + marketing budget of less than $30M. That's a massive success for such a low budget film.

It has nothing to do with film journalists "collectively deciding" what films are failures. If anything many sites are dancing around just how bad the film is doing. Not only was the opening weekend $50-70M shy of predictions, the box office is dropping much faster than anticipated. Solo is on track to, at the very least, become one of the biggest box office bombs in history.

"Lol, maybe you should know what you're talking about before commenting. "

And we're done. Another internet expert here to enlighten everyone on how things worked because he "googled" it or found it on Wikipedia. Gee, those sources can't be right.

Budget includes marketing whether you think it does or not. Thus ends the conversation with the internet expert. Enjoy your expertise, expert. "Lol, maybe you should know what you're talking about before commenting. "

ROFLMAO!

Maybe you should talk to someone in production before making a comment.

thorstein2153d ago

Shhh... stop using facts. This isn't the place for facts! The "journos" already decided that this movie would be a "bust." But, since it is sitting at #6 of 2018 movies after only one week, well, they need to have their LIES become clicks, don't they?

Utter garbage.

The 10th Rider2152d ago (Edited 2152d ago )

When it's all said and done, here's the films Solo will DEFINITELY fall behind worldwide in 2018:

Deadpool 2
Black Panther
Infinity War
Operation Red Sea
Ready Player One
Detective Chinatown 2
Rampage
Incredibles 2
Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom
Antman and the Wasp
Mission Impossible Fallout
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2
Aquaman
Bumblebee: The Movie
Mary Poppins Returns

And possibly even movies like Hotel Transylvania 3, Skyscraper . . . and even Fifty Shades Freed.

At the end of the year it might not even be in the top 25 films worldwide.

It takes a special kind of fanboy glasses to see the film as anything less than a massive flop.

If this movie fails then its a good thing for star wars fans, it shows Disney this is not what we want from star wars.

PhantomS422154d ago (Edited 2154d ago )

or it means they need to think twice and tread very carefully when making an origin about a legacy character. The lead actor was complete trash which pretty much killed the movie on top of other issues. They had 3 home runs in a row though.

thorstein2153d ago

Well, it already succeeded. Bigger openings than Ready Player One and A Quiet Place (or are those failures too? I can never quite figure out the internet.)

The 10th Rider2152d ago

Ready Player One made $300 more than Solo will overseas. A Quiet Place had less than one fifteenth of the budget.

Nodoze2154d ago

Kathleen Kennedy sucks for Star Wars. Get this feminist activist OUT of Lucasfilm! She has proven she cares not about the legacy, the franchise, or the fans instead choosing to spout her BS and inject it into the galaxy far far away.

Lando is a pan sexual - really?
An activist robot (with a female voice of course) - really?

Enough already. How much do you want to bet that she will somehow spin HER failure here as the fans rejecting strong male role models and anything to do with the original trilogy. Meanwhile Rian and Kathleen pissed all over Skywalker and uttterly decimated the legacy with the shit show that was Last Jedi.

Deadpoolio2154d ago

Jesus its seriously time to stop trying to push this Lando pansexual nonsense, at NO point is it said that he is pansexual....ALL of this garbage was taken from an interview with Lawrence Kasdan where the reporter asked something about Lando could be pansexual, and his ONLY response was he shrugged his shoulders and said sure...He's NOT a pansexual in the movie, its not alluded to that he's a pansexual and its NEVER stated that he is pansexual.....The MORONS trying to make something out of this is just stupid and shows how desperate little insecure idiots are to reach for something to cry about....

The 10th Rider2152d ago

“There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality,”

“I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.”

“He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun,”

From Lawrence Kasdan^

That's a far cry from "his ONLY response was he shrugged his shoulders and said sure"

Plus you've got this from Donald Glover:

"There’s so many things to have sex with. I mean, serious. I didn’t think that was that weird. Yeah, he’s coming on to everybody. I mean, yeah, whatever. He’s like having like a ’70s swing — yeah. It just didn’t seem that weird to me ’cause I feel like if you’re in space it’s kind of like, the door is open! It’s like, no only guys or girls. No, it’s anything. This thing is literally a blob. Are you a man or a woman? Like, who cares? Have good time out here."
