"Black Panther" carries the weight of historical import on its shoulders but never treats it like a burden.
Co-writer and director Ryan Coogler’s film is defiant, unapologetic and triumphant. The first Marvel Cinematic Universe film starring a black superhero, with people of color behind the camera as well, is certainly remarkable for those reasons. But if that’s all it were, it would be an artifact, something academics could discuss as an important step forward, nothing more. (Sorry, Will Smith, but “Hancock” is relegated to footnote status.)
