It bugs me because they could do so many other things. I personally would have liked to seen a spin off featuring the Doctor of the Parallel Universe or one of the multiverses out there. You could do anything, the regenerations could have been different after his first form so everyone might have been different. What about if the first scene is literally him regenerating from William Hartnell and instead of Patrick Troughton it's someone brand new. This series is much darker, he stays away from Earth, travels mostly alone, finds more mature themes and there's no love interest crap for his new companion if he gets one.
