I think the problem with the film was that it wasn't marketed correctly. This is a sequel to the series AND it is only the story of the Gunslinger (and some Wolves of the Calla) but that is all.

SPOILER:

It ends with a set up for the sequel. I saw it twice and it was better the second time.
