'Ghost in the Shell' Disappoints Critics, Audiences Alike

After being hyped for nearly a year, Ghost in the Shell was practically dead on arrival at the U.S. box office this weekend. Not enough marketing in my opinion.

spicelicka2576d ago

I haven't watched it but I was turned off at the PG-13 rating.

It's not the marketing, it's it not being a true Ghost in the Shell movie. Changing the character around (Major Mikoto Kusanagi, not Major Mira Killian) to appeal to the western market, and no real deep meanings ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wi... ), just a watered down version of a story for the ADD generation. It's a decent action movie, but not a good Ghost in the Shell movie at all.

Good, now hopefully Hollywood will stay away from adapting anime movies while simultaneously taking a huge dump on it's fans.. looking at you whoever thinks it would be a good idea to adapt Akira. Funny thing is, it's actually a decent popcorn sci fi movies, the average movie goer would probably enjoy it. The problem though is they took a deep intelligent cult classic and reduced it to being a movie which is about as smart as your average Michael Bay film.

KingPin2577d ago

i totally agree with you on that. hollywood needs to stay from a lot of things aside from anime and video games.
they should stay away from remaking classics - ben hur and magnificent 7 come to mind and they should stay away from old franchises too like the lone ranger. come to think of it, if it wasnt for comic book movies, hollywood has really nothing to show in the wake of originality compared to 90s and early 2000s

Chevalier2577d ago

I shudder to think that some studio out there also wants to adapt Cowboy Bebop.

WelkinCole2577d ago

It could have been better executed but at fundamentally it was still a good movie.

Yeah I expected more but then again most movie goers these days just prefer to sit there and have everything handed to them like they are just passengers.

Reducing GITS to a bog standard Hollywood "find my mysterious past" movie? No, not good.

That's not really true. People say this same thing about video games too, and the success of both companies (Atlus, FromSoft) and games (Fallout NV, Undertale) stand in firm opposition to that idea. Forgive me for not keeping up quite as much with movies, but Mad Max and Zootopia (both of which have a lot of not so obvious things to say once you look past the hamfisted stuff) also demonstrate otherwise. The big dumb stuff is usually more popular, but that's literally always been true, and it didn't stop Inception or Starship Troopers.

WelkinCole2577d ago (Edited 2577d ago )

Everything was there for a good popcorn sci fi action movie. It was obvious they wanted it to be accessible to many people. The type of movie goers that love marvel films and the like. Not inception or Interstellar that requires people to pay attention. So I was not blown away but at the same time it did enough to be a standard good sci fi action movie.

PapaBop2577d ago

^^^ That's the problem.. they took something that became a cult classic thanks to deep themes and being a thinking man's film and then reduced it to the same level of intelligence as a Marvel movie. Taking a popular IP then doing away with almost everything that made it popular deserves to flop in my honest opinion.

Bathyj2577d ago

Damn. I was hoping this was good. The trailer actually gave me hope but I guess it turned out to a decent action sci fi movie but with none of the deep philosophy that made you still think about it decades later. It would be hard for a remake to have that sort of profound effect like the first time you saw the Matrix.

Hmm, I still want to see it but Ill go in to watch it for what it is, popcorn fluff, not what I wanted it to be, a brilliant tribute to a bonafide classic.

Hollywood is nothing but a ghost in the shell of its former self. Its time to turn the page on the American film industry.
