The Daily | ‘Kubo and the Two Strings' Review

The Daily

Made by the studio behind “Coraline” and “ParaNorman,” the animation in “Kubo and the Two Strings” is a joy to behold. The way Kubo’s hair dangles over his eye patch like yarn, or how Monkey’s fur blows in the breeze are realized with the utmost care, seamlessly blending stop-motion and digital styles. Much like “Max Max: Fury Road” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” proved last year that there’s no substitute for the thrill of practical stunts, “Kubo” reminds us of the magic of tactile animation. The film’s surprisingly graceful 3-D flourishes give it an almost magical quality with swords and paper dragons leaping from the screen.
