Forbes: Ben-Hur opens this weekend via MGM and Paramount/Viacom VIAB -2.10% Inc. on what is the final weekend of the summer. It is as good a sign as any about how the industry has changed. Back in 1959, a remake of Ben-Hur was one of the biggest movies of all time and a winner of 11 Oscars. In 2016, it’s a mid-August release that almost no one is excited.
With pre-release tracking pegging this for a $15-$20 million debut, Paramount is hoping to catch on overseas. And with a budget of just $100m (almost cheap for this kind of movie), it doesn’t have to break records to break even.
