‘Pete’s Dragon’ Review: Wall Street Journal

WSJ: The clearest difference between Disney’s remake of “Pete’s Dragon” and the 1977 original is the evolution of Pete’s almost-constant companion, a dino-size flapper named Elliott. The earlier dragon was a sweetly silly animation (green body and pink wings, with a tuft of pink hair) grafted not quite seamlessly onto the live action. The current Elliott is a formidable digital creation (green all over, and gorgeously aerobatic) with a life of his own. There’s another difference, though. The humans who were such cloying caricatures almost four decades ago have also been given lives of their own in an agreeably retro tale that kids will love, and not just for its computer-generated magic. The most special effect in the film is genuine feeling.
