AVClub: In Barry Sonnenfeld’s stupefying Nine Lives, a cat-hating billionaire real estate mogul (Kevin Spacey) finds his consciousness magically reassigned to a house cat named Mister Fuzzypants while his body lies in a coma. Does the experience remind him that he needs to spend more time with his wife and kids? Of course it does, but that’s not really the point. Boasting no less than five credited screenwriters, the film is like an exquisite-corpse exercise in kiddie-movie plotting. Yes, there is a workaholic parent faced with a case of supernatural mind-swap (a bizarre but enduring trope), but that’s almost an afterthought in light of the movie’s obsession with emasculation and with validating Spacey’s Tom Brand in his plan to build the tallest skyscraper in the northern hemisphere, opposable thumbs be damned.
