i think in this timeline this is an entirely appropriate thing. if they were to go another route with an entirely different cast, then i think it's ok.

Shame, just watched Green Room and he was really good in it.

Odd Thomas was a good one as was Charles Bartlet

Is the character of Chekov himself going to be killed off? “I have thought about it, we’re working on it, and it’s too early to talk about it,” he said.

So....they are possibly replacing him. Which, they should because there was a successor to the original trek's Chekov too. As for Yelchin, he was a fantastic actor. RIP.

"So....they are possibly replacing him."
Replacing the character instead of casting someone else as Chekov and carrying on as normal? I'd imagine so. Probably out of respect to Yelchin. Maybe they'll say Chekov got a transfer to the Excelsior or something.
Really sad that he died though, he was brilliant as Chekov. He played a pretty good Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation as well.

Yeah, I would much rather see a new character like you said. I actually enjoyed most, if not all of his films- even Fright Night. Shame indeed.

Smart move. Hope they give his character a good tribute.
