The Innocents Review - AVClub

AVClub: Sorry, horror fans—The Innocents has zilch to do with the 1961 classic of that title (itself adapted from Henry James’ The Turn Of The Screw). In what might have been an effort to avoid any such confusion, this sober tale of spiritual crisis was called Agnus Dei when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. That choice—since abandoned for a direct translation of the original French title (Les Innocentes)—also had the advantage of clearly communicating the film’s religious milieu: “Agnus Dei,” Latin for “Lamb Of God,” is a chant recited during the Eucharist by various Christian denominations. “You take away the sins of the world,” goes one common version, but the sins of the world are very much present in The Innocents, which tells the true story of a horrifying, faith-testing ordeal. Like many historical dramas, unfortunately, this one depicts gripping events without bothering to craft a coherent viewpoint that lends them meaning.
