Anticipation is an easy thing to have at a film festival, and it’s safe to say that the mood of what-is-he-going-to-do-now? that preceded the Cannes premiere showing of “The Neon Demon,” the new film from Nicolas Winding Refn, was at a particularly high tingle, and for good reason. Refn can be a filmmaker of extravagant humanity, as he proved in “Drive,” and also of extravagant inhumanity, as he proved in “Only God Forgives,” the voluptuous and ludicrous fantasia of revenge that was roundly despised when it played at Cannes in 2013.
