You can’t stop the beat!
Or at least that’s what NBC hopes by choosing Hairspray the Musical as its next live event musical later on this year.
Three years ago, NBC had an unexpected huge ratings success by airing a live performance of The Sound of Music tarring country singer and former reality contestant Carrie Underwood. The following year NBC had a slight misstep with the Peter Pan musical, which doesn’t have nearly as recognizable a song list. And last year their ratings ticked back up with another surprise in the form of The Wiz, starring Queen Latifah as Oz and Mary J. Blige as the Wicked Witch of the West.
