Why J.J. Abrams Now Regrets Deboarding Star Wars Before Episode VIII

Washington Post: J.J. ABRAMS recently read the script for Episode VIII of Star Wars. And he had a reaction to it that his lifelong friend, “The Force Awakens” actor Greg Grunberg, had not ever heard from the director over their decades together in the industry.

“He read it and said something he never, ever says,” Grunberg, who plays pilot Snap Wexley in the new film, tells The Post’s Comic Riffs. Grunberg said that Abrams called the Episode VIII script “so good” that he wished he had written it.

That is extremely encouraging! I saw VII a week ago today and I'm still on a high from it, going to see it again on the 28th too and I can't wait!. I really hope more star wars games start to come flooding out too, I was pretty let down with Battlefront but I'd love to see a new KOTOR or Force Unleashed type of game soon.

It is better the second time through as well. All I can say is THANK YOU JJ!! In the end it took someone with the love for what Star Wars is to produce something even close to the original trilogy.

On the second viewing the break neck pace becomes even more apparent. It starts and just does not let up....and it is FANTASTIC.

Thanks JJ, please work with the team to make another one.

I think he did a great job, I doubt the director of VIII can top his job.

Have you seen Rian Johnson's past work? The guy's done more memorable stuff in half the time Abrams has been in the film industry (imo).

scark923043d ago

I have not, hope you are right! :D

So you're saying Looper and 3 episodes of Breaking Bad is more memorable than everything Abrams has done?

Really??

@thekhurg

"So you're saying Looper and 3 episodes of Breaking Bad is more memorable than everything Abrams has done?

I'm including his other directed works like Brick as well. And it's nice how just asking a question back to them and then saying "really?" can somehow be considered an argument.

@-Foxtrot

You actually missed Rian's direction work for Breaking Bad IF you're going to count TV shows. I say "IF" because, in case you hadn't noticed, I literally stated the FILM INDUSTRY in my first reply to Scark92 (which I'm counting back to him writing Gone Fishin' and Armageddon). So, with TV not considered for the point I was trying to get across--and since he typically fell back to "executive producer" position for those shows--we have a clearer picture.

"Mission: Impossible III
Cloverfield
Star Trek
Super 8
Star Trek Into Darkness"

For my money, I'll take Looper's creativity over any of these films. Heck, Abrams' "mystery box" shtick even made the marketing more creative for some of those than the actual films themselves. If you look at the ones he's wrote and/or directed, you most often see a style of just outright mimicking his inspiration to the point of his work feeling hollow. And that's sort of carried over with Force Awakens (though it was still a good movie).

The next two films will surpass VII just because Rian Johnson is heavily involved with both of them. Abrams is pretty overrated - cool guy, but overrated.

coolbeans3043d ago

As far as I'm aware, Rian isn't that heavily involved with IX. He's writing the film treatment, but the Jurassic World guy is directing.
