Red Skull is one of the few villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date who didn’t completely stink out the movie he was in. Although Hugo Weaving really didn’t enjoy his experience portraying the Nazi super-villain, his depiction put the likes of Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash, Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian, Christopher Eccleston’s Malekith and Lee Pace’s Ronan to shame.
He appeared to perish at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, when he tried to handle the powerful Tesseract, but the general consensus is that he was actually simply transported to the other side of the universe. Whether or not Weaving would reprise the role is open to debate, but the door remains open for it.
