EW: There’s a long tradition of comedians diving deep into dramatic movie roles to show us—and themselves—there’s a Janus-mask flip side to being funny. Sarah Silverman, who’s best known for her deadpan, taboo-flouting stand-up act, is no stranger to acting on screen (even if she tends to play the wacky friend who says inappropriate things).
We Got This Covered
Snapshots into a life unraveling, I Smile Back is an unpleasant, earnest look at the struggles of coping with bipolar disorder and addiction. New Jersey housewife and mother of two children, Laney Brooks is prone to mistakes. Chief among them her decision to abruptly stop taking the lithium tablets that treat her mental disorder. She pounds alcohol at dinner, snorts cocaine in the bathroom, and cheats on her husband with their friend, but even when she’s home there’s a cavernous distance between the married couple.
Deadline
Broad Green Pictures scooped up rights to I Smile Back in March after the film premiered at Sundance, sparking right away to Sarah Silverman in a rare dramatic turn. In this exclusive trailer ahead of its Saturday festival premiere, you can see what the fuss is about: Silverman plays Laney, a suburban mom who seemingly has everything but suffers from depression which launches her, both internally and outwardly, to dangerous places, threatening herself and those she loves. The pic is a Special Presentation at TIFF, and screens first for press and industry Saturday before its Canadian premiere Wednesday night at Princess of Wales.
Can't imagine her in a serious role, she's a comedian and i just expect everything she does to be funny.
