Zack Snyder: Sorry Marvel, ‘Batman v. Superman’ Transcends Superhero Movies

Daily Beast

Zack Snyder, the architect of DC’s movie universe, talks about the ‘Crash the Super Bowl’ contest and how Batman and Superman transcend the superhero genre—unlike Ant-Man.

Between his upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and his plum gig shepherding the foreseeable future of the DC cinematic universe, Man of Steel director Zack Snyder has superheroes on the brain—even on a rare day off spent promoting Doritos’ final, high-stakes Super Bowl filmmaking contest.

How arrogant

"The credit goes to [Batman Begins director] Chris Nolan because he set the die for the DC Universe in a great way that I tried to emulate"

But that stuff works for Batman as it's something you can actually get away with the grounded, realistic tone. Other characters such as Wonder Woman, Green Lantern or maybe even a future unannounced addition like Martian Manhunter can't be done like that.....well....it could but you'd end up changing far too much of the source material to the point where you are like "Why couldn't we have gotten a proper <insert character here>. He should of ignored Nolans tone and what he did, I mean the reason why Nolan didn't add in other DC references like Superman, WW or Green Lantern is because he knew his tone wouldn't for those characters in his grounded universe.

" But I feel like Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman. They’re not just, like, the flavor of the week Ant-Man"

At least Marvel tried something new with Ant Man, he's an outdated character and took a risk doing it. Unlike them who are only onto their second film and have decided to focus on Batman (their safety net) while poor old Supermans own sequel has been put on hold for "more Batman"...rumours he's just confirmed in the article.

Batman as a focus in Batman vs Superman

Batman trilogy fully in development/planning

Batman cameos planned, Suicide Squad for example.

While Superman waits for his sequel

It's like if Marvel decided to squeeze Iron Man into the first Captain America, Thor or even Guardians of the Galaxy

A wholehearted agree with everything you said. Whats worse is that if you bring up any of these arguments, youre immediately considered a troll or a Marvel fan. I love both, Marvel and DC but DC are runing their universe by continuing to mimic Nolan. Nolans movies were some of the best superhero movies but thats because he inderstood the TONE of the character. Superman is not dark! He does not fit into a realistic world. I cant belive Zack Snyder does not understand this. Thats the reason why Man of Steel did not do as great at the box office as expected. And then, as you said, when the movie failed to meet expectation (bc they did the character wrong) they just shoe horn batman in because they figure thats what the audiance wants more of. They dont understand any of their characters. The only one they keep doing right is Batman and that is because Nolan showed them how. It pisses me off that i have to endure a poorly translated Superman for this generation just bc they dont know what makes the character great.

"youre immediately considered a troll or a Marvel fan"

It's usually because people love making it into a war and put you within a side based on what you are saying. I literally couldn't give a crap about sides, I just want well made, comic book films which respect the source material...just like I am with video game films.

I grew up reading mostly DC but I'm the most critical of them because I just can't be a blind fan. I loved the Tim Burton Batmans and got past some "bits2 within the films which didn't really go well within the comic world (Joker killing the Waynes) but at the time it was the first big Hollywood Batman film. The Superman films were alright and I've enjoyed some of their animated stuff but when I saw they were doing a Universe like Marvel I thought it was fantastic as they could learn from their mistakes and do it much better since DC owns all the film rights to their characters. However most decisions they've made after Man of Steel has completely ticked me off, mostly the actors given the roles and the fact they've chosen this dark, gloomy, serious tone despite the fact their TV serious at the time (with Arrow) was doing this.

I mean watching Man of Steel in Colour (Youtube video) is fantastic and such a amazing thing to see. I just don't see why they can't go on the more light hearted side. I'm not saying make it in the same tone as Marvel but have a little fun with it and stick to the source material more since they actually can.

With Marvel you have the fact they don't own all their characters meaning storylines will be different, something they can't help and then there's the fact when they first started the cinematic Universe they didn't know how well it would take off, if they did they would have planned it much better.

"by continuing to mimic Nolan"

I wouldn't mind if the Man of Steel films were a standalone trilogy like Batman but it seems they were like "Oh shit, this thing at Marvel is going really well...I KNOW, lets just start our Universe with Man of Steel" and from then on they were forced into the Nolan tone for other films. Now for their second film we are getting Batman vs Superman...we shouldn't be getting that until after the first Justice League or something.

Porcelain_Chicken3148d ago

Arrogant. But brutally honest.

As for grounded, I think they just mean the world. Not the Superheroes themeselves. We have Killer Croc, Shazam, Wonder Woman and Enchantress. Clearly this ain't Nolanverse. Or "realistic". The characters are simply being put into a world more reactionary like ours. Like Superman being alienated and shunned by humanity for example. By "Nolan set the tone" I think he meant Nolan pointed him in a direction different from Marvel's. A direction WB failed to emulate with Green Lantern. They are drawing from that direction but it isn't Nolanverse completely.

And no, Marvel tried nothing new with Ant-man. dafuq!? It was the exact same story from Iron man (2008) evil guy from company steals tech because he's evil and wants power and all evil things. If it wasn't for Marvel going with Scott we would have no new dynamics and would have gotten a shot for shot remake with a different hero. The villain was incredibly dull and one note and the movie was littered with cheap laughs instead of character development. It panders to the lowest common denominator. Wanna know what tried something new? Man of Steel. It tried something new wth Clark's origins. We always skip his tough early years and humanity's doubts and go right on to him trying to woo Lois. MOS may not have been successful in everything it tried but that was something new.

Ant Man is an outdated character, they took the chance to do a film based on him rather than sticking to what they already have. Instead of writing a check right this very minute to get RDJ to make Iron Man 4 they wanted Ant Man. Dosen't matter what the story is because that goes with a lot of films, even the DC ones.

"We always skip his tough early years and humanity's doubts and go right on to him trying to woo Lois"

Urm...Smallville, they literally had an entire show dedicated to this.

Fact is they took a chance on Ant Man, like they did with Guardians of the Galaxy. While DC haven't even release their second film, BvS and are already trying to shoe horn in Batman, their safety net, as much as they can.

Now we have Captain Marvel coming up, Black Panther, Doctor Strange and even TV shows like Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones....characters which aren't as popular or well know like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor.

Porcelain_Chicken3147d ago

Outdated? Well he is unknown but that doesn't mean he is anymore risk than any other movie being made. Every movie is a risk. My point with that was that Ant-man was incredibly formulaic. And yes story does matter, it was yet again a white, old corporate generic CEO guy.

Also saying they are shoe horsing Batman in like he was tossed as an afterthought at the last second is ridiculous. You know he was written into the story right!!? He is a central part of the movie. It being a vs this early on means nothing. If they can introduce a new Batman and tie-up the loose ends of MoS in one movie then more power to them. Embrace that change man.

Yes Smallville did it but it wasn't the greatest show ever. It took a lot of weird liberties that made it very meh.

And DC have an announced slate of superhero movies too. All of which are just as much a risk as those. So I'm unsure of your point there. No movie is without risk. But you can play it incredibly safe.

MilkMan3148d ago

Zacks right.
Batman and Superman transcend "heroes" of the minute.
They are mythological. The only thing about his statement off-putting is that he said it. But this is a matter of fact.

And if his and the DC universe movies angle is to showcase these characters for the icons they are and not a rumpus room of joy and silliness.

Then we should by all means, be in for a treat.
and it should be very interesting to see in 30 years from now which set of movies last the test of time.

WizzroSupreme3148d ago

They totally do. Can't wait for Batffleck to rock it this coming March.

acemonkey3148d ago

he keeps on talking like his some big shot. yeah he made man of steel was that booted off DCU. but then they decide to cancel ( until we dont know when) MoS 2. they was going to make MoS 2 without batman. Now they are making BvS ( and now Making the first half or so of the movie about batman) yes BvS is going to sell more then ant man (its going to make alot of money)

Hold_It3147d ago

@ace

He did Watchmen which is easily one of the if not the best superhero film made. I'll admit I used to like a lot of Marvel stuff back when I was in early grade school and Spider-Man was one of my favorite superheroes of all time, but that easily changed when I watched Batman The Animated Series.

DC is more entertaining to me, because they have more interesting villains. Hell, Batman's villains that hardly get utilized are way better than the Joker and the majority of Marvel's universe.

If only Hush would be used more, or Calendar Man. They could easily do a realistic Batman film with Hush as the main antagonist. It seems The Avengers and the recent Marvel films are meant as a family fun kinda movie rather than trying to showcase the characters in a more lifelike universe. I will always like X-Men the best as far as the Marvel Universe goes, but that is because the themes of X-Men are very realistic and relateable.

Charles was based off of Martin Luther King Jr.
Magneto was based off Malcolm X.
X-Men and the majority of mutants want to find a positive way to go about ending racism, and the Brotherhood wants to go about it in a negative way, while Apocalypse and Co. want to just wipe all of existence and conquer anything and everything. Of course it's deeper than that, but that's the jist of it.

acemonkey3146d ago

Watchmen was panel to panel comic book movie ( which the comic was better. I didnt enjoy watchmen bc of that face it was almost identical to the comic.

When i say he really didnt do much for DCU is true. Yes he booted it off with MoS when people have such mixed feelings about, and i never met this fan that loved it. MoS post to have an sequel but then they added Batman in it.Then MoS 2 postponed and now mostly wont happen.

DC characters are great but without batman DC is failing even in comic book. If you like their comics/tv shows/cartoons ( which i do too) im not hating DC fans or people that are hyped for the movies. Zack needs to prove to me he can do something great outside of zombies and what people say about watchmen. to each their own MCU is killing it ( hate it or love it)

MasterD9193147d ago

Oh yeah? Then WTF is it doing coming out in 2016 Zack...Avengers 2 wasn't that great but slayed the box office anyway because there was no competition! Now they want to go head-to-head against Marvel, which we all know is BS because Marvel has over 10 movies on them already.

Your loss bub.

Hold_It3147d ago

@Master

Jurassic World beat The Avengers 2. It didn't do all the slaying you give it credit for.

They are taking their time with it rather than just throwing it out there like Fox did with Fantastic 4. Out of those 10 movies how many are actually good besides The Winter Soldier, Avengers 1, The Incredible Hulk, and Guardians Of The Galaxy?
