Deadline: Oscar-winner Paolo Sorrentino’s The Young Pope stars Jude Law as Lenny Belardo, the fictional Italian-American Pius XIII. From Sky, HBO and Canal Plus, the eight-part series is currently shooting for air next year. The production has released the first photo of Law as Belardo/Pius relaxing in the Rome sun (above — almost brings to mind The Talented Mr Ripley, but that was a different part of Italy). The plot centers on the controversial story of the beginning of Pius’ Pontificate. A complex and conflicted character, he is a man of great power who’s stubbornly resistant to the Vatican courtiers, unconcerned with the implications on his authority.
