The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? feels like a pretty strong rebuttal to that viewpoint, showing that yeah, this would have been one weird Superman movie, but it also might have been a fascinating one. But even if you come out of the documentary thankful the plug was pulled, the personalities involved and the story’s they tell are worthwhile and offer some great insight into just what a struggle it can be when so many people try to work together to pull off a film of this scope.

For Tim Burton's defunct Superman Lives, Superman (would've been played by Nicolas Cage) was to battle Brianiac, a super-intelligent alien. Much of the concept art that has surfaced depicts Brianiac as a green-skinned humanoid head with a spider like body. Why a spider's body? Because hairdresser-turn-film producer Jon Peters was, and still is, obsessed with "the fiercest killers in the insect kingdom."
