‘Spider-Man’ Casting of Marisa Tomei as Aunt May Draws Social Media Outcry: ‘Too Young,’ ‘Hot’

The Wrap

News that Marisa Tomei is in talks to play Aunt May in Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man” reboot set social media tongues wagging on Wednesday, with many claiming the 50-year-old actress is far too young to play the hero’s traditionally more matronly caretaker.

Bad enough Peter looks way too young, now Aunt May does aswell. What's wrong with older actors anyway, are Marvel worried it will put people off or something

Rosemary Harris was absolutely perfect for that role. It helped that she was given good material to work with. Everything she said in Spider-man 2 was gold! The "I believe there's a hero in all of us" speech. Or the story she tells Peter of when Ben proposed to her in Spider-man 3 right before she almost breaks down but manages to hold it in. I don't know if I'm alone on this but I thought that was a powerful scene! As far as comic book movies go anyways! :D

Kills me that we'll never get more of that. Current Marvel seems more "quippy" than anything. :/

See I like that wise old woman thing Aunt May had. With this you aren't going to get the same reaction.

Why would you cast someone like her. She's not someone you need a big star for.

She's someone for Peter to look up to.

Can we just see the movie before we start a pitchfork party?
Peter is very young also, so it may just make sense.
Besides we've seen the old wrinkly version 100 times.
Nothing wrong with Marisa. What? its to weird for the fans? to maybe get a little tingling down there when you see Aunt May?

She is 50 years old that's kind of older aunt range. Plus here is something no one has brought up, she is actually from NY. Kind of like Aunt May was in the comics. So we wont have a psuedo trying to hide my British accent (Rosemary Harris). Besides aunt does not have to equal grandmother.

the woman is 50, you'd never know to look at her, but she is.

at the age they're going for with the new Peter, a woman of her age playing his aunt seems about right to me.

are guys really complaining that she's too attractive for the role?

It's just gonna be weird when Aunt May brings dates back to the house, that's all I'm saying.
