Most of the time, I find myself feeling like Orange is the New Black is a comedy. Because most of the time, well, it is. It blissfully and cleverly bats love, hate, fate, and desire around like a cat with a ball of yarn. But then, when the drama does hit, it's like a wrecking ball. Because the darkness is always there, just beneath the veneer. And if one scratches the surface too much, it arrives. Reminding you that this show, at its core, deals with some really dark topics. And none of its characters can be easily defined, or aligned. Sure, it can get glossy at times. Meme-ready and quote-heavy. But there are few shows that can tearfully turn the screw like it can.
