Gambitcon - In a gripping true story set during the height of the Cold War, American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire) finds himself caught between two superpowers when he challenges the Soviet Empire. Also starring Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard, PAWN SACRIFICE chronicles Fischer’s terrifying struggles with genius and madness, and the rise and fall of a kid from Brooklyn who captured the imagination of the world.
At first I thought that this is going to be another yearly Oscar bait, but the trailer blew me away and definitely has me intrigued. Sure, it actually is an Oscar bait but with a great director and an amazing cast, it can turn out into much more. Tobey Maguire is definitely in need of a good role plus I can’t wait for the internet to start with “the Spiderman dark side slowly taking over or Fischer going Shia LaBeouf” jokes. Stories of people perfecting themselves at craft and going through hardships are always interesting and if they are done right then they can be inspiring tales as well.
Pawn Sacrifice opens limited on September 18. Directed by Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai) , from a script by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders)
