IGN: This week’s episode of Silicon Valley manages to once again pull the rug out from under Pied Piper after giving them a shot in the dark in “Adult Content.” “White Hat/Black Hat” finds the show continuing to struggle to maintain the laughs and the plot. It’s starting to feel as though Season 1’s 8 episode was just about the perfect length for this show, as with two episodes remaining it feels like it’s outstaying its welcome.
This episode had a lot of things that fell flat, the most significant of which is its commitment to pedophile jokes. Erlich and Jian Yang’s attempt at an app for active playgrounds is oddly specific and seemingly only serves as a setup for the “pedophiles aren’t early adopters” joke. Coupled with the cliché recurring gag of Richard cursing in front of children and saying awkward sexual things to them, “White Hat/Black Hat” spent too much of its time trying to force a laugh from shock value.
