Evolution. Survival of the fittest. The adaptation of a species over several generations to make them more successful in their environment. It’s a central idea behind both the X-Men comic books and a driving rule of movie franchises. And if the X-Men franchise is to survive, to thrive among its competitors, it has to make like a mutant and evolve. They need new characters. They need new plotlines. They need to kill Wolverine.
DBC: “ If the first trailer for Josh Boone‘s The New Mutants reflected anything, it was pride. Pride in its dark, dreary ambience and its insistence that horror is as much of a setting as it is a sensation. Pride in its nabbing of up-and-coming talent. Set this oppressive drabness to the musical stylings of Pink Floyd and you’ve got a film that intrigues, perplexes, and basically guarantees a cult following. Such was the thinking at the time. Now that the film is finally out and subject to ravaging from both critics and fans, I’m not sure that thinking still stands.”
Jeremy of The Daily Rotation wrote, "Josh Boone's The New Mutants is an interesting mess of mutant drama, not quite leaning into the horror elements enough, oddly bouncing back-and-forth in tone and execution. It's one of those films that you admire for swinging for the fences, despite it striking out almost immediately and in disastrous fashion."
