tony stark created a cyborg thor when thor was missing or presumed dead, he got a strand of hair and his DNA that is the story in civil war. the cyborg thor named ragnarok was on the pro registration side. given that storyline i only theorized that
#1. thor may be presumed dead in the end of avengers 2 or make the audience feel he dies.
#2 thor dies and be resurrected to continue in thor 3 ragnarok (he is a god anyway)

either way the bottomline is ragnarok is created thru thor's DNA, and if he is well and good why the hell would stark get his DNA and why would thor allow it unless marvel does some creative license and change the storyline for ragnarok??

thor dying is not ridiculous, it can happen, i dont think he will but it is possible and that is my own guess by reading an article also stating that thor could possibly die and it is probable and not impossible.

the reason that war machine would not be missed as you said is the reason he wont die.

if you watched the direct to dvd movie serenity (a film made by joss whedon) and astonishing x men motion film (made by whedon again), he kills a major character at the end, a character that is in the core group. whedon puts good drama on good films that makes it instead a great film entirely.

in captain america 2 they did faked fury's death but whedon was not the one helming that project.

She was a little better characterized in The Winter Soldier. I'll admit that I didn't like her in The Avengers, but after TWS she is not SO bad, still not grand.
