In his one and only monologue, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) bluntly tells us, as he strokes his wife’s beautiful head, how he is filled with the desire to crack open her skull so to unspool her brains and understand the mysteries that lie within. This calculated and shocking opening gambit sums up Gone Girl in its entirety, perfectly illustrating how it meticulously leads you in one direction only to later reveal that you’ve arrived at a totally unexpected destination. It’s the mystery-thriller genre at its best and, once again, David Fincher is the one to deliver it...
