James Wan’s haunted house throwback, The Conjuring, was arguably the surprise hit of last summer. Raking in over $300m at the box office and drawing plenty of critical acclaim, Wan’s tribute to a bygone era of horror was admirable in its refusal to adhere to the 21st century genre conventions of cheap jump scares and a rudimentary narrative.
The Conjuring relied instead on chillingly effective cinematography, superbly convincing performances from its cast, and expertly crafted tension and suspense that made the scares hit home all the harder.
Annabelle – a spin-off based on The Conjuring’s creepy antique doll of the same name – offers none of those things, and as such is practically impossible to recommend to anybody.
With the new The Crow remake coming soon, we take a look back at the 30-year-old cult classic original–and where the stars are now.
Kaam Chalu Hai Review: Based on true events, this movie is thought-provoking and inspiring
Rebel Moon Part 2 Review: This movie doesn't feel anything new or worth remembering, which is a shame.
