Terry Gilliam admits that he was wrong. Even though Brazil is his magnum opus and undoubtedly one of the best sci-fi films of the 1980’s, Gilliam now says he got it all wrong. The future isn’t about overreaching dystopian governments, it’s about manipulative gargantuan corporations. So while these monstrosities of corporate America are duking it out for every last dollar, where does that leave the everyman? We’re not being directly subjugated, and our rights are not being reduced significantly in the name of equality for all. No, instead, we’re a getting lost in the scuffle. That bright future we were promised is out of our reach, so we have to look somewhere else. That’s the premise of Gilliam’s latest foray into post-modern science fiction, The Zero Theorem.
