Man Of Steel is ranked way too high. I don't think people really fell in love with it either. I actually enjoyed Superman Returns more because it at least had a nice visual landscape and that sense of nostalgia as it was aimed to blend with the old ones.

Nostalgia factor is a bad way to judge a movie's quality, no offense lol. I feel like SR failed on every level. From Superman bailing on his son, to Lois being extremely dimwitted (EXTREMELY), to Superman creepily watching Lois from the bushes to Lex practically prostituting himself to an old lady for money. :l Plus it was a sequel to Superman 2 and erasing S3, but it wasn't exactly a direct sequel according to Singer and served as a sorta reboot. <_> It had charm, and that nostalgic factor, and it's a personal guilty pleasure for me but i feel as though it didn't really know what it wanted to be. Campy doesn't walk hand in hand with serious afterall.

Also i feel it was a useless sequel. What exactly changed by the end? Which characters were actually better or different from the experience? Lois is still dumb-ish, & confused. Supe's kid is still unaware that he's got 2 dads-ish and Lex is isolated somewhere. Basically Superman 2's ending minus the kid.

MoS had some script issues all thanks to Goyer. But it had enough legs to stand on it's own, without the nostalgia factor. It did well to separate itself from Donner's Superman and was ballsy enough to make a radical change in tone.

Ballsy is a bad way to judge a movie's quality, no offense :P

I wasn't :b just brought up that it took Superman in a fresh direction. It didn't rely on ballsy the way SR relied on Nostalgia.

StarWarsFan3515d ago (Edited 3515d ago )

I think Man Of Steel did kind of rely on ballsy in the sense of going in a new direction for the sake of going in a new direction. What I mean is that I don't know if they really put in the thought for a unique feel for Man Of Steel. Superman Returns seemed like a well-intentioned homage to the old movies, so I wouldn't say it was intended to rely on nostalgia. Perhaps that's what it ended up doing for people that weren't fans of the movie.

But to me, Man Of Steel's fresh new direction was just masquerading the goal of going toward the successful route of the Dark Knight trilogy; dark and seriously dramatic. I still think Superman needs to find its own niche as a fresh franchise and Man Of Steel wasn't the answer. Warner Bros should not have felt the easy need to rely on having Christopher Nolan connected to try to make it work. The man doesn't need to be an answer to everything for DC characters.

And so I wouldn't rank Man Of Steel the highest out of all Superman movies. I wouldn't rank Superman Returns highest either, but I just enjoyed Superman Returns more because it had a sense of fun similar to the original movies and the nostalgic homage seemed unique. It genuinely felt like they wanted to evoke the feel of the old movies and that's often rare with new movies so long after their originals. Usually everything wants to be done entirely different, sometimes only for the sake of it, such as what I thought of Man Of Steel.

Hmm, very well written!! Thanks, I disagree-ish but I see where you're coming from. Do you feel MoS can improve in a sequel or do you think it's beyond saving?

Also outta curiosity (I ask all my superman fan friends this) which would you feel makes a better trilogy?

Superman, Superman 2, and Superman 3.
OR
Superman, Superman 2, and Superman Returns.

I'd go with Superman, Superman 2 and Superman Returns. I think Superman Returns just had a beautiful story: returning in the story while also returning to movie theaters after so long.

I think Man Of Steel can improve and I don't think it's beyond saving, but it's tough to foresee major improvements with the same director coming back and the inclusion of Batman, which now has the filmmakers sharing their time with other new actors/major characters. With the inclusion of Batman, it just seems like they rushed in and said to themselves, "We're so proud of what we did with Man Of Steel, the only way to improve is merging with another hero and keeping all else constant."

its really close to call which superman film is better between superman or man of steel. for me ill go with man of steel because of its amazing fight scenes and it was a great story overall. superman returns is lock for third best for me.
