Penny Dreadful has certainly worked its story in a way that you can see the connections coming into play but end up waiting for there to be some payoff. At least in terms of the larger stories themselves as there’s a lot to be intrigued by with the smaller stories as they play out. With some good backstory now filled in and some really interesting story material surfacing in the previous episode between the plague ship and what we saw Vanessa being possessed by making it clear that it’s in control, it upped the ante on exactly how far her possession is all about. Which definitely made for some heartbreaking moments in a way as we saw her fall apart, but also some decidedly creepy ones in the final minutes that really took it where it needed to go for its old school approach.
