The 50-year-old actor stars as a U.S. Army sergeant called "Wardaddy" in Fury, a World War II film that hits theaters Nov. 14.
"He's playing this badass, hard, tough, intense guy," director David Ayer tells PEOPLE. "It's a different kind of role for him."
