How Much Will The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Make?

CBM: With only "alright" reviews as of right now (and the RT score likely to drop upon US release), how strong with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hold out against the onslaught of new summer blockbusters coming out after it? Will it make the amount that Sony is hoping for in $1 billion? Hit the jump to hear my thoughts.

This will be a tough call. It's now "cool" to hate Spider-Man simply because Sony has it. So no matter what people will downplay it simply because Marvel doesn't own the license.

That being said, those "haters" are full of crap and will go see it anyways lol

There is one BIG problem though, Godzilla. That movie will either be amazing, or suck epicly. If it's amazing, it will steal almost ALL of Spider-Mans thunder. Spider-Man will be out for two or three weeks at that point so it will have most of its bank, but it won't be breaking any Sony records if Godzilla takes over so soon.

That's an overly simplistic way of looking at it. I'd say it's less about Sony just having the license but rather the blatant cash raking just so they can hold on to the rights, which is clearly shown by just how cynically-produced the first entry in this series felt--especially so for the writing.

I enjoyed the first film, and I'm enjoying the fact that Sony is creating an entire universe around Spider-Man. He is the only character I really go out of my way to read, so it's fun to me. It's a lot better than him replacing Thor or Captain A at Marvel, since they don't have the time or space to release ALL of them and Spider-man at once.

That being said, facing facts Sony could go out of their way and create the best superhero film of all time hands down, and "fans" will still cry for Marvel to get the license back. It's annoying. Sony is not anywhere close to as bad as Fox.

Can't really complain either. Disney/Marvel only has rights to the cartoon, yet look how much milking thats getting. Almost instantly we saw Ultimate Spider-man everything, everywhere lol Imagine if they had rights to the movies....

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the first film. I thought it was a bad film that had a lot of lazy writing.

I can see your reasoning behind other things, but I don't think those Spidey fans aren't JUST after it because of it not being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Heck, if we were just getting off from Sam Raimi's first Spiderman film, I don't think the outcry would be the same since the first two were considered really quality movies. This one though? It sort of reeks of trying to copy Marvel's formula and losing the meaning behind Peter Parker as a character in the process.
