No ‘Independence Day’ Sequel For Will Smith

Deadline

After spending several years looking to generate a sequel or two to the 1996 Fox smash hit Independence Day, it looks like director Roland Emmerich and co-writer and producer Dean Devlin are going to have to take on those earth-leveling aliens without Will Smith. I’m told reliably that Smith informed the studio that he won’t be joining in on a sequel that the filmmakers hope to have in theaters for July 4 weekend, 2016. That marks the 20th anniversary of the 1996 original that grossed $811 million worldwide and launched Smith on a trajectory to become the world’s most bankable movie star.

So he'll do After Earth, but not Independence Day 2... Really, Will?

-Foxtrot3729d ago

Lol I know right

He apparently passed on Djano Unchained for After Earth you know, I bet his next film sucks and has his son in it

SantistaUSA3728d ago

OMG After Earth was plain garbage, I will never ever watch that crap again.

WeskerChildReborned3728d ago

Lmao that's what I was just thinking! smh.

Porcelain_Chicken3727d ago (Edited 3727d ago )

Agreed. One. Hundred. PERCENT.

This would have been yet another chance for Will to shove Jaden in our face.

Will put the kid in a After Earth poster & yelled to the world DEAL WITH IT! Then the world turned around & yelled NO!

GET THE F**KING HINT WILL!!! Nepotism at it's worse.

Yeah, I'm thinking that shipped has sailed. If they were going to make this movie they should have thought of it 10 years ago.

maniacmayhem3728d ago

I think it's even more disappointing that there will be a sequel to the turd Independence Day.

SilentNegotiator3727d ago

Well that seems harsh. The movie is mediocre, but "turd"?

maniacmayhem3727d ago

I didn't like this movie at all. michael Bay gets a lot of sh#t from movie critics but Roland Emmerich is lower than him. All flash and no substance, at least Bay tries and puts a story in between explosions.

SilentNegotiator3727d ago

Well Bay gets 10x the attention, so it's not like he doesn't get his due over Roland.
