Maybe it is true but the studios didn't want it to be announced yet, especially if the contract hasn't been signed. So with all the positive response to him as Lex Luther and contract isn't signed yet, now he can negotiate a bigger deal which the studios were probably trying to avoid.

I don't doubt he could pull it off at all, if anyone could portray Lex Luthor, it would be Bryan Cranston.
