Max Brook's novel World War Z is a heavy text under a familiar guise. Underneath the trappings of a zombie apocalypse was an analysis of geopolitical power, bioterrorism, disease, and the stress on the human spirit during a global meltdown that would change the course of mankind forever. Its multiple perspectives from various cultures, strata of class and intertwining themes is perhaps too much for one film to handle in only a couple of hours. Even with only one angle from which to frame the book, the film adaptation is afraid to tackle anything more than what Brook’s novel appears to be at first glance: just another zombie story.
