Daniel Joslyn of PopCults.com writes "Several episodes in, Defiance isn’t exactly what I expected, and it has definitely taken its sweet time finding its footing. There are still entire plot lines that either don’t make sense or feel like misfires. But I think that over the past few weeks the show is starting to really figure itself out. Sure, it has aliens, but it often edges towards being a crime procedural, and it owes an even bigger debt to westerns than Firefly did. Take away the old-fashioned TV-style forehead aliens and the giant CGI Gateway Arch with a radio station in the top that plays The Cure, and the main plot line in this episode might as well have been in an episode of Gunsmoke."
