It’s not enough to save the movie but should stop the audience from napping, all the way up to an incongruous axe fight that ends in a way which defies all versions of reality."

For those not caught-up on the rapidly expanding state of Indonesian action cinema, The Mo Brothers are best known for co-directing with Gareth Evans the famed “Safe Haven” segment of VHS 2, which they followed-up with a solo thriller, Killers. Headshot is their attempt at a legit actioner, borrowing liberally from The Bourne Identity, but mixing it in with an ultra-violent aesthetic true to their horror movie roots.

Iko Uwais may not be a household name in the U.S. just yet, but among fans of a certain type of action movie he’s a superstar. The Indonesian actor and martial artist burst onto the scene with Merantau and had an even bigger breakthrough in The Raid. Headshot, from directors Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel (collectively known as the Mo brothers, though they are not actual brothers), has Uwais doing what he does best — kicking ass and taking names — with spectacularly entertaining results.

The Raid is a high bar to set for action movies, but since it’s my only frame of reference for Indonesian action cinema, it is, for better or worse, the standard I set for similar movies. However, it’s not too much of an unfair comparison when it comes to Headshot, a movie co-directed by Timo Tjahjanto, who co-directed the V/H/S/2 short “Safe Haven” with Raid director Gareth Evans, and starring Raid lead actor Iko Uwais. Both movies feature balls-to-wall action and plenty of violence, but a flat-footed film like Headshot makes you appreciate the skill that went into the Raid movies.
