I think both are great. As for music that really is a hard one. Howard Shore vs John Williams I love both. I have their songs on my play list. Yeah if you go by today's standard then Lord of the Rings would win. But if they both came out in the year 2000 then I think Star Wars would win. They both are awesome films so I see no reason that one has to be better then the other.

If you watch the Star Wars films now (i.e. if you'd never seen them before) you'd realize that there is actually quite a lot of pointless cinematography. The films are just very long for the sake of being long.

However of course if you watch it with a nostalgic lens, you'll love it because it was the first ever massive film production of it's kind.

But LOTR isn't like that, it's a little slow in the very first film, but every scene is there for a reason, and the extended editions of the films prove that because there are some very significant scenes they've cut out of the films.

This is an unfair comparison because movies have changed loads over the last 30 years, and somethings just don't work now, hence the new Star Wars trilogy sucking so badly.

I can still watch Star Wars and enjoy it but Lords of the Rings are a snorefest.
