10 Films Make Oscar Shortlist for Best Visual Effects

Collider:
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its shortlist of 10 films that will contend for the Best Visual Effects Oscar. The films that have made the cut include The Dark Knight Rises, Cloud Atlas, Skyfall, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Disney’s John Carter. The list is full of impressive blockbuster fare from 2012, but as we were reminded last year (Hugo over Rise of the Planet of the Apes) the winner of the category tends to favor a Best Picture nominee. As Ang Lee’s adaptation of Life of Pi includes stunning visual effects and is an early favorite to land a Best Picture nomination, prognosticators would do well to keep their eye on that film as the race moves forward. That said, there’s not exactly a lack of great work to thumb through, so this should be an interesting category. (Cloud Atlas, Culture, John Carter, Life of Pi, Skyfall, Snow White & The Huntsman, The Academy Awards, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey)

I have a feeling that either batman, the hobbit, avengers or skyfall will win this. I would say spidy and prometheus aswell but their effects felt somewhat dated... or maybe its just me.

All of them had great visual effects but only one can win. I wish them all the best.

From what I've seen I think The Avengers DESERVES it, and Spider-Man had insane first person scenes that make it worthwhile as well. However being the Oscars, the award will probably go to Batman since Nolan is attached to it. or The Hobbit, you never know though since its so close to the end of the year.

I'd hate to be the guy having to choose which one wins. I'd say the Avengers but that would be because it's my favourite film of 2012 so far (we'll have to wait and see if The Hobbit is better) but they all have amazing visuals.

I thought the CG in Spiderman was poor. As in, you could tell a ton of money was put into it, but it still looked incredibly fake and off-putting. Especially compared to something like The Avengers.

Cloud Atlas was a damn beautiful movie. I have a feeling The Hobbit will win though, especially when the Lord of The Rings trilogy won each year in the same category.

it would come down to Life of Pi or the hobbit. cloud atlas and prometheus can also pull an upset.

My vote is for life of Pi but most likely Hobbit will take this with ease. I haven't seen it yet so up in the air still.
