Geek Binge: Oscar-winner Lee Daniels has directed and co-written a film that is drenched in sweat and southern style, but very little substance. Based on the novel by Peter Dexter, The Paperboy frustratingly meanders around the basic plot of a reporter returning to his home town to investigate a case in which a man, currently on death row, may be innocent. Interestingly, the main premise takes a narrative back seat to a collection of random events, themes, and subplots, which don’t ever seem to take us anywhere of importance, at least in terms of the main storyline. The movie is saved from being a complete disaster due to a top-notch cast that definitely delivers the goods.
