The Dark Knight Rises is set 8 years after the events of The Dark Knight and Gotham City is now virtually crime-free, thanks to the Harvey Dent Act. However, Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) is wrestling with the terrible secret of Dent's crimes, concealed by Batman to ensure the people of Gotham have a symbol of hope in Dent's memory. Struggling with his new status as a wanted vigilante, a fragile Bruce Wayne/Batman (Christian Bale) has been shut away in Wayne Manor, watched over by the troubled eyes of faithful family friend and surrogate father Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Cain).
