Bogged down by a lengthy and overly serious narrative, “Snow White and the Huntsman” gets by in much the same way its heroine does: on good looks and good intentions.
Though the basics are the same — Snow White is the fairest in the land and her evil stepmother wants to kill her — this is a completely new story for the most part. Writers Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side”) and Hossein Amini (“Drive”) use the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale as a shell, stuffing it full of new details and twists. These additions are generally welcome, but the trio of writers feel the need to over-analyze nearly everything. For example, the evil stepmother (played by Charlize Theron) needs a back story to show where her powers came from and why she hates men so much. She even receives a name, Ravenna, because just calling her “Evil Queen” might make her even more unsympathetic.
